Frequently Asked Questions
How old do I have to be to start training with LTMA?
As we don't currently accommodate a childrens' class, we require new students to be fifteen or above. Students under the age of eighteen will need to contact us prior to visiting us or bring along a parent or guardian on their first visit as your insurance documents will need counter-signing.
Am I too old to learn Ju Jitsu?
As long as you're mobile then no, you're not. Ju Jitsu can be quite dynamic so we recommend that you come and try a class to make sure it's suitable for you. If you find that it's not the martial art for you then we'll be happy to recommend something else for you.
Will my injury / disability prevent me from joining in?
The answer to this question is usually no; the versatility of the art allows us to work around most injuries and disabilities. It's always a good idea to consult your GP first if you're worried or get in touch so we can discuss how we might accommodate your needs.
Will I get hurt?
Although Ju Jitsu is a contact sport and there is a certain element of risk involved (as with all martial arts), we have safety precautions in place to prevent injuries from happening. Although injury is a possibility it is very rare as our students work at their own pace, respect and take good care of each other. Although there are lots of photographs and videos of our students doing amazing things, don't forget that you will start with the basics and only progress to more advanced techniques when you're ready and can safely do so.
Do I have to train twice a week and do grading exams?
Not at all, you have complete control over when you chose to train. Although most of our students do take regular gradings, it's not compulsory.
What do I need?
On your initial class you wont need much more than comfortable clothes and a drink - you can find more information about your first class here. Once you decide to continue training with us you'll need a gi (or suit) and insurance. You can discuss this further with an Instructor or contact us.
Can I come and watch a class before I join in?
Of course you can! You can find us here.
