Mune Gatame | Side Control

Mune Gatame or Side Control. An effective pin-down with submission opportunities.
Key points:
  • Control Uke's north arm
  • Keep knees wide and flush to Uke's body.  North knee should be next to your Uke's ear
  • Pull arms towards you to close gaps
  • Relax but keep weight biased towards your hips
  • Use north shoulder to control Uke's head
  • Be ready to close up developing gaps
Side Control | Mune Gatame
Side Control or Mune Gatame by Jay & Chris
Mune actually means chest and side is Yoko, so the technical translation is Chest Hold.  This technique is a good pin but and one of the best half-way positions from switching between other positional controls.  Mune Gatame is required for an 8th Kyu (Yellow belt) promotion and is a foundation technique required for groundwork.
