Tate Shiho Gatame | Standard Full Mount


Kesa Gatame or Scarf Hold. An effective pin-down with submission opportunities.
Key points:
  • Stay tight to your Uke
  • North elbow should be on the floor
  • Keep a gap between your feet for base
  • Post your south leg for manoeuvrability
  • Keep south elbow tucked tight over your Uke's arm
  • Control Uke's are with a bucket grip
  • Relax but don't sacrifice all your weight
  • Don't allow north leg to drift away

Kesa Gatame is one of the basic pin-downs required for 8th Kyu (Yellow Belt) and a foundation technique for groundwork.  Unlike Judo, in Ju Jitsu we keep the rear leg posted upright in order to maintain maximum movement potential.  If done effectively, it can be used to control a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent.
