What will I learn?
All learning is done at your own pace and you will begin with the basics, enabling you to comfortably and safely work up to more advanced techniques. Here are some of the things you will cover in class:
Breakfalling
Breakfalling will be the very first thing you learn when you start training with LTMA. Breakfalling is all about learning how to land and hit the floor without hurting yourself or your partner. Although it can look very flashy it's really very easy to learn and you'll pick it up quickly. Breakfalling is a really good skill to have as part of your everyday life. Many of our students have successfully used their breakfalling skills on slips, trips and more serious falls. |
Throwing & Take-Downs
When you've learned how to fall, you'll learn how to throw. Throws and take-downs come in many forms, some of the most common being hip-throws and sweeps. The throws and take-downs you learn will be incorporated into your freestyle self defence. You can see some of the throws we do by visiting our YouTube Channel. |
Street Defence Techniques
As part of your Ju Jitsu training you will also learn how to defend yourself from attacks, both empty-handed and armed. Some of the attacks you will learn to defend yourself from include grabs, strangles, strikes, armed attacks (knives, bats etc), attacks from the rear and so on. You will learn to defend yourself in both a stood and ground position. When you're ready you'll do freestyle attack and defence to develop your reactions and instinct. |
Striking
As well as learning how to defend yourself from strikes, you will also learn how to deliver striking combinations using the hands, elbows, knees and legs (feet and shins). Although you will learn to strike on the pads and using some shadowboxing techniques, you will also have the opportunity to spar with other students, when you are ready and if you wish to, using the appropriate body armour and level of control. |
Submissions
You will learn to submit and finish opponents using a variety of joint locks and chokes, both from a standing and grounded position. Submissions are carried out with the utmost care for your partner's safety and under controlled conditions. When you are advanced enough you will also learn to throw using joint locks. |
